DeepSeek To Be Hosted On Indian Servers, Says Ashwini Vaishnaw

Published January 30, 2025

The Chinese artificial intelligence platform DeepSeek will be hosted on Indian servers, according to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. This decision aims to alleviate privacy concerns associated with cross-border data transfers.

DeepSeek, founded by Liang Wenfeng, a prominent leader in the quant fund industry, has notably reshaped the global AI landscape. Its rapid ascent has even caused a selloff in tech stocks worldwide.

India has taken a cautious approach to cross-border data transfers and has implemented regulations that necessitate local data storage. China has been a particular focus of these concerns.

Union Minister Vaishnaw also shared that India is expected to receive an investment of approximately $30 billion dedicated to hyperscalers and data centers over the upcoming two to three years.

During a recent press briefing, Vaishnaw discussed the advancements of the IndiaAI Mission, which has exceeded its initial goals for GPU availability. Currently, there are 18,693 GPUs available to support researchers, startups, and businesses across the country. This includes a procurement of 15,000 high-end GPUs, with 1,480 being the advanced H200 models.

For context, models such as DeepSeek and ChatGPT required 2,000 and 25,000 GPUs, respectively, for training their systems.

Vaishnaw announced that about 10,000 GPUs are now accessible for immediate use. He also mentioned that a common computing facility for researchers will be operational within two days, which is expected to serve as an essential resource for a variety of AI projects in India.

Nithin Kamath has previously indicated the urgency for India to move beyond its traditional 'jugaad' approach as competition intensifies with innovations like DeepSeek coming out of China.
