Stock Market Today: All You Need To Know Going Into Trade On Oct. 16

Published October 16, 2024

The US stock market has opened on a positive note as we head into trade on October 16. Two out of the three major stock indices are showing slight gains, primarily due to better-than-expected earnings reports from significant companies. This news has fostered a positive outlook on Wall Street.

The S&P 500 index saw a marginal rise of 0.1%, reaching a value of 5,866.74. Meanwhile, the tech-oriented Nasdaq Composite also made a minor increase of 0.07%, bringing it to 18,515.97. However, the Dow Jones Industrial Average did not follow suit and opened 0.2% lower, standing at 43,240.17.

On the other side of the globe, Indian stock indices closed lower. This decline was primarily driven by disappointing earnings from Reliance Industries Ltd. Their report for the September quarter failed to meet expectations, which adversely affected the overall market. Reliance Industries was responsible for a 37.36 point impact on the Nifty 50's total drop of 65 points.

The Nifty index fell 0.28%, decreasing by 70.60 points to close at 25,057.35. Similarly, the Sensex recorded a drop of 0.19%, losing 152.93 points to finish at 81,820.12.

In the Indian market, foreign portfolio investors continued to sell Indian stocks for the twelfth consecutive session. On Tuesday, they sold equities worth Rs 1,748.7 crore. Conversely, domestic institutional investors were active buyers, purchasing stocks worth Rs 1,655 crore, according to data issued by the National Stock Exchange.

Interestingly, the Indian rupee also showed signs of strength, appreciating by 2 paise against the US dollar to settle at 84.04.

In summary, the current market environment highlights mixed results with certain US indices performing well while Indian markets face downward pressure due to disappointing corporate earnings. Investors will be keenly watching how these trends unfold in the upcoming trading sessions.
