AI, Automotive Technology, and Unusual Gadgets Set to Shine at CES 2023
The annual CES trade show is officially opening on Tuesday in Las Vegas. This year, the event will focus on major themes like artificial intelligence (AI), automotive technology, and a variety of intriguing gadgets that promise to capture attendees' attention.
Thousands of companies, ranging from well-known giants like Samsung, LG, and Sony to emerging startups, will showcase their latest products and ideas during this exciting convention, which is expected to attract around 100,000 visitors.
CES is not just a platform for launching new consumer devices and services; it is also a venue for revealing concept designs and innovations that provide insights into future trends in the technology sector.
According to industry expert Leo Gebbie from CCS Insight, AI is poised to remain a significant focus at this year’s CES, but he cautions that there may be signs of “AI fatigue.” As the technology becomes a common discussion point, it can sometimes lack the compelling stories that once made it so exciting.
“AI will undoubtedly be a prominent theme across major keynotes and press conferences, as well as throughout the show floor,” Gebbie noted. He explained that CES has shifted toward emphasizing home entertainment and automotive technology, with substantial exhibition space dedicated to these areas.
He added, “While AI is now an expected part of the conversation, it may be challenging for companies to present truly innovative announcements involving AI. However, there might be renewed interest in specific categories, such as smart home technologies, which could benefit from fresh ideas.”
Gebbie anticipates a mixed bag of device categories at CES. Smartphones are not expected to take center stage, and wearables have also become less prominent over time. Nonetheless, he believes that attendees can look forward to seeing some of the quirky and unconventional gadgets that are often showcased at the event, although they may not last long in the spotlight.
Last year, for example, LG and Samsung unveiled concept models of transparent televisions, while robots frequently appeared on the display floor.
Another industry analyst, Paolo Pescatore, emphasized that the automotive technology segment has become increasingly significant at CES. He stated, “At times, it feels like CES is turning into more of a car electronics show than a consumer electronics event. The distinction between these sectors is increasingly becoming blurred as more tech companies explore automotive technologies due to the rising importance of software.”
“We can expect numerous businesses to demonstrate a wide array of solutions and features aimed at enhancing automotive experiences. This can range from infotainment systems to safer transportation methods, with AI playing a crucial role in the push toward autonomous driving,” Pescatore elaborated.
Pescatore further pointed out that CES serves as a platform for countries to showcase their technological capabilities, and several UK firms are anticipated to feature prominently at the event. He remarked, “There are many exciting areas to explore at a sprawling event like CES, such as robotics, technology for fitness and well-being, and sports tech, which are all part of the larger wearable tech sector. These areas are especially promising, especially when considering the overarching trends surrounding AI and faster chips.”
“CES represents an opportunity for countries to demonstrate their leadership in technology,” he added. “France typically stands out for its innovation and representation, while other nations will be eager to make their mark with unique products, many of which will likely be powered by AI.”
