Apple's AI Features for iPhones in China Expected Soon
Apple is looking to introduce its artificial intelligence (AI) features for iPhones in China as early as May, according to recent reports. The company has formed numerous teams in both China and the United States to help realize this goal. Notably, Apple is working with local companies to meet its generative AI requirements in China.
During a recent event, Joe Tsai, the Chairman of Alibaba Group, confirmed that Apple plans to utilize his company’s generative AI technology for iPhones sold in China. Although Tsai did not specify the exact timing for the release of these AI features, it was previously noted that Apple and Alibaba had already sought approval from Chinese regulators.
Collaboration and Compliance
Reports indicate that Apple will integrate Alibaba's technology into its AI models, which could serve as a compliance layer to ensure that certain content and information can be censored according to Chinese government requirements. As part of this arrangement, Alibaba will have the capability to request updates to Apple's AI models when necessary. Apple will make outdated AI features on a user's device inactive until the user updates their device to remove any inappropriate content. It's important to note that these requirements will only apply to iPhones specifically intended for the Chinese market and not to devices purchased elsewhere. Moreover, any Apple Intelligence features will be disabled on devices meant for other regions if the user's location is switched to mainland China.
At the same event, Tsai mentioned that Apple had consulted multiple companies in the region for AI-related needs, including DeepSeek. While Alibaba will serve as Apple's primary AI partner in China, there are indications that Apple will also collaborate with Baidu for specific features such as Visual Intelligence, which allows users to scan items with their phones to gather information online. For AI capabilities that require more processing power and utilize external servers, Apple is likely to depend on local partners as well.
Market Strategy and Challenges
Bringing AI features to Chinese iPhones is a strategic objective for Apple as it navigates a challenging market. China represents Apple's second-largest market; however, the company has seen a decline in sales as customers increasingly turn to local brands that offer AI functionalities. In the last quarter of 2024, Apple reported an 11.1 percent drop in sales within the country, resulting in the company dropping to third place in China's smartphone market behind Huawei and Xiaomi.
