SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle to Invest $500 Billion in AI Infrastructure in the U.S.
SoftBank Group Corp., along with OpenAI and Oracle Corp., is set to create a new company that will invest a minimum of $500 billion in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in the United States. This announcement was made by President Donald Trump on Tuesday, emphasizing that this initiative will generate a significant number of jobs for Americans.
The investment will be part of a program called the Stargate Project, which aims to develop new AI infrastructure specifically for OpenAI over the next four years. SoftBank Group and OpenAI shared this information in a statement, noting the project's potential to elevate technological advancements in the country.
During a press conference held at the White House, Trump referred to this as "the largest AI infrastructure project by far in history". He highlighted that the initiative will play a crucial role in deciding "the future of technology" and identified China as a key competitor in the tech space.
President Trump, alongside SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, Oracle CTO Larry Ellison, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, spoke about the plans at the press conference in Washington.
Trump stated, "This investment is all taking place right here in America," predicting the creation of over 100,000 jobs for American workers. The companies involved stressed that this undertaking will not only assist in the re-industrialization of the United States but will also bolster national security capabilities for the U.S. and its allies.
This sweeping investment initiative follows a previous commitment by SoftBank Group's CEO, Masayoshi Son, who announced last month an intention to invest $100 billion in U.S. projects focused on AI and other leading technologies over the forthcoming four years.
Son remarked, "This is the beginning of a golden age for America," and humorously acknowledged that he increased his investment pledge in response to Trump’s suggestion to double it to $200 billion.
The principal financial contributors for the Stargate Project include SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX, an investor in AI and advanced technology. SoftBank and OpenAI will take on primary roles within the Stargate initiative, with SoftBank responsible for financial matters and OpenAI managing operations. Son is expected to serve as the chairman of the new entity.
Joining this ambitious project as technology partners will be Microsoft Corp. and Nvidia Corp., focusing on the development of AI and constructing data centers as part of their collaboration.
Recently, SoftBank has shifted its focus towards AI, positioning it as a central aspect of its business model. The company has promoted AI's implementation across various sectors globally, buoyed by its influential chip design subsidiary, Arm Holdings PLC, and investments in AI startups like OpenAI.
At a shareholder meeting last June, Son expressed his ambition to develop an AI that surpasses human intelligence within ten years, proclaiming that he is dedicated to creating artificial superintelligence.
This collaboration has generated considerable interest and support from the tech community, suggesting a strong commitment to advancing AI across the United States.
