BYD Unveils Cutting-Edge Battery Technology for Electric Vehicles

Published March 21, 2025

BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, has introduced a groundbreaking battery technology that promises to enhance the range of electric vehicles significantly. This innovation can add an impressive 250 miles of range in just five minutes of charging.

The company’s newly developed ‘Super e-platform’ incorporates advanced electric motors and a battery pack designed to work with 1,000-volt technology. This allows for a remarkable charging rate, enabling one mile of range to be added every second while the vehicle is plugged in.

In conjunction with this technology, BYD has created its own line of liquid-cooled DC rapid chargers. These chargers can support charging speeds of up to 1,360kW, providing an essential infrastructure boost for EV users. The company plans to install 4,000 charging stations throughout China to support this fast charging capability. However, it remains unclear if these units will be available in the UK market.

Wang Chuanfu, the chairman and president of BYD Group, remarked on the company's ambitions, stating, “To completely eliminate users’ charging anxiety, our goal is to make EV charging as fast as refueling a gasoline car – achieving ‘oil-electric parity’ in charging speed.”

The performance metrics of this new technology are equally impressive. The electric motor now delivers an astonishing 777 brake horsepower (bhp), allowing vehicles equipped with this system to reach a top speed of 186 mph.

Currently, the Super e-platform technology has been showcased in BYD's Han L saloon and Tang L SUV, although these models are not yet available for purchase in Europe.
