OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT Gov for US Government Agencies

Published January 31, 2025

Summary: OpenAI has rolled out ChatGPT Gov, a specialized version of its ChatGPT model designed specifically for US government agencies. This version enhances security and compliance measures while offering a robust toolset for various administrative tasks.

OpenAI has created a new version of its AI known as ChatGPT Gov, aimed at serving US government agencies. This initiative marks OpenAI's largest product launch since it introduced ChatGPT Enterprise.

According to information shared on its website, government agencies have the flexibility to deploy ChatGPT Gov on either Microsoft Azure's commercial cloud or its Government cloud. By self-hosting ChatGPT Gov, agencies can better manage their own security, privacy, and compliance measures, aligning with rigorous cybersecurity standards such as IL5, CJIS, ITAR, and FedRAMP High.

OpenAI emphasizes that this self-hosting option will streamline the internal authorization process for using OpenAI tools that can manage non-public sensitive data. The use of ChatGPT Gov will also adhere to OpenAI's established usage policies.

Features of ChatGPT Gov

ChatGPT Gov includes many of the capabilities available in ChatGPT Enterprise, providing various features that enhance its usability. Some notable features include:

  • Users can save and share conversations within their government workspace, as well as upload text and image files.
  • Access to GPT-4o, the leading model that excels in areas such as text interpretation, summarization, coding, image analysis, and mathematical computations.
  • Employees can build and share custom GPTs within their government workspace.
  • An administrative console allows CIOs and IT teams to oversee users, groups, custom GPTs, single sign-on (SSO), and more.

Real-World Applications

Since its launch in 2024, ChatGPT has been adopted by over 90,000 users in more than 3,500 federal, state, and local government agencies. These users have exchanged over 18 million messages, leveraging the system for a variety of tasks such as research, translation, and daily administrative support.

Some examples of how agencies are utilizing ChatGPT include:

  • The Air Force Research Laboratory is utilizing ChatGPT Enterprise for administrative tasks, enhancing access to internal resources, providing basic coding support, and facilitating AI educational efforts.
  • Los Alamos National Laboratory is using ChatGPT Enterprise for scientific research and innovation. Particularly, its Bioscience Division is conducting studies to evaluate how advanced models like GPT-4o can be safely used in laboratory settings to further bioscientific research.
  • The State of Minnesota's Enterprise Translations Office is leveraging ChatGPT to provide quicker and more accurate translation services for the state’s multilingual communities, leading to significant cost reductions and faster turnaround times.
  • Employees with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania participating in a pioneering AI pilot program reported that using ChatGPT Enterprise reduced time spent on routine tasks, such as analyzing project requirements, by approximately 105 minutes per day during regular use.
